Pure arithmetic, and worth seeing because averages are heavier than they look. A location rated 4.2 across 100 reviews is sitting on 420 total stars. To average 4.4, the total has to reach 4.4 times the new review count: with x new five-star reviews, (420 + 5x) divided by (100 + x) equals 4.4, which solves to x = 34. Thirty-four straight five-star reviews to move the score two tenths. The lesson is not a trick for collecting stars - platform policies require review solicitation to stay honest, and ours does.
